I was honored to be asked by Merritt Horan Capurroto create this design as part of my piece for the Creative Pinellas and VSPC (Visit Saint Pete Clearwater) organization for the Arts Annual this past December 7th 2024. Proceeds from this show went to benefit local artists impacted from this year’s hurricane season. The theme “Still Shining” represents the resistance and resilience that our community has faced and is still thriving in the aftermath of these storms.
For my piece, I chose a crab for my focal point , as it symbolizes many things to me and I feel representative of many of us in the art community….One of the many reasons I resonate with a crab is I am a Cancer, it is my astrological sign. Much like the crab, we all grow and change over time…a crab will grow , change , molt , & come out stronger than before once its shell has hardened. Much like after a hurricane, we must rebuild, heal, & come out stronger. A crab must be resistant to both the environment and predators to survive, as humans, we must do the same in our own ways surviving in our environment and staying clear of those that would do us harm or exploit us for their own benefit. To be an artist, you must have a hard shell /tough skin to survive, as you put your work out to the masses, thus making yourself vulnerable…much like a crab, that tough exterior protects our insides; our emotions , our heart, & our minds…all of that is on display and vulnerable as an artist. All of that being said, crabs also have survival instincts, just like artists. We use our work like a shell to protect us and also be our voice, which can also become claws to tear down barriers and keep ourselves and others safe. Crabs have been around for 1000’s years, and thankfully, artists have and will be too! You can’t keep up down, we’re #stillshining
